Air UK Fokker F100 aborts its takeoff

On May 4th 1998 I went spotting at Schiphol Airport at runway 01L when an Air UK Fokker F100 aborted it's takeoff almost at V1, which is a rare event.
You can see the smoke coming from the locking wheels
and the thrustreverses opened.

The pilot told the tower over the radio that he saw some smoke and either thought of a fire or of a burst tyre. It seemed that the left front tyre had burst.

Within a few minutes the fire fighters were at the scene, but there wasn't a real fire. In the mean time all the passengers had to remain seated.

They had to tow the aircraft away, but the groundhandling tug that first came to the scene wasn't suitable (it grabs around the landing gear and lifts the whole aircraft up). You can see the captain leaning out of the window discussing with the people next to the airplane.

The runway in use for takeoff was closed because of the F100 and it was just at the beginning of the outbound peak hour at Schiphol, which is around 2 pm, resulting in a very busy time.

They had to call a regular goundhandling tug with a conventional push rod. You can see it hooked on in this picture. Busses for unloading the passengers had already arrived at the scene.

It's getting more and more busy. All lining up in front of runway 09, which had to be used because runway 01L was closed of course.

Here you can see the F100 actually being towed away followed by a few fire fighter trucks.

Here you can see the F100 being towed to Exit 3 of runway 01L where the passengers were loaded on the busses to be taken back to the terminal.

WOW!!  Now this is traffic!!  I've never seen so many aircraft in one shot at Schiphol before! The outbound peak hour of all the intercontinental flights really got going, but the runway was still closed.

Here you can see the F100 being unloaded at Exit 3 where they began transferring the passengers into a bus standing by to take them back to the terminal. Runway 01L was in use again when the F100 was moved to Exit 3.

Here you can see the F100 being towed back to the hanger at "Schiphol Oost" after the passengers were off. It had to be checked again, because executing the thrustreverses when the engines are at full throttle isn't very good for the engines.
